Has Baylor baseball ever made it to the College World Series
When it comes to Baylor baseball, you don’t have to be a die-hard fan to appreciate the team’s history. While some universities’ sports programs may take pride in titles and championships, Baylor’s baseball program has a unique point of pride – College World Series appearances.
The First Time
Baylor’s first appearance at the College World Series was in 1978 and just like an awkward first date, we were a bit nervous. The team had to play against a tough USC team, and USC had one of the greatest college players of all time in Ron Roenicke. It wasn’t our day, though, as we lost to the Trojans 8-3.
The Return
Baylor Baseball didn’t make another trip until the 1972 season. But boy, was it worth the wait! The team had a great run, winning their Regional and Super Regional matchups. They then made it all the way to the championship, where we played the Miami Hurricanes. Baylor gave it their all, but lost in the deciding game of the best-of-three series.
Third time’s a charm
Baylor’s third appearance at the College World Series was in 2005. The team, led by legendary coach Steve Smith and star player Mark McCormick, clinched their spot with some hard-fought wins over Arkansas and Clemson. However, our run ended in the semifinals where we lost to Texas and sadly didn’t make it to the championship series.
The Epic Run
The most significant College World Series appearance in Baylor’s history came in the 1979 season. We fought hard in all our games, staying alive through several elimination games, and eventually made it to the championship series. We played against Cal State Fullerton, who we had defeated earlier in the tournament. But the Titans had plans of their own, as they beat us in the first game. However, we bounced back and won the second game, setting up the deciding game of the series.
The championship game is cited as one of the best games in college baseball history, lasting a marathon seven hours and 13 innings! In the end, Baylor emerged victorious, winning 1-0 and setting off a massive celebration in Waco, Texas.
So, has Baylor baseball ever been to the College World Series? You bet we have, and we’ve had some fantastic series games, even winning the championship back in 1979. It’s essential to remember that while winning is great, experiencing these moments and games is what makes Baylor Baseball such a fantastic program to follow. Let’s see where they can take us next!
